Nedlands Music Program

Music at Nedlands embraces a wide range of performance opportunities. From classroom music where the students begin their music journey through learning about the music in all its forms and its place in the world, to singing together and playing percussion instruments in Year 1 and 2, learning to play the recorder to promote music literacy and performance practice in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 and finally learning the ukulele in Year 6. Every student is given an opportunity to create music.

Through the Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS), students in Year 3 can learn to play the violin or viola. In Year 4 the cello is offered and in Year 5 the band program begins where lessons are offered in flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, double bass and percussion. Over 100 students are involved in the IMSS program.

There is a string orchestra for students in Year 5 and Year 6, led by our conductor Mr Neil Barclay. Students in Year 6 form the concert band, conducted by Music Specialist Mrs Alison Conroy. There is also a smaller String Ensemble exclusively for Year 6 students.

The choral program is another feature with more than 60 in Year 4 forming the Junior Choir and students in Year 5 and Year 6 combining to form the Senior Choir, which has 115 students.

All five ensembles perform at school concerts as well as public events and they participate annually in the Orchestra Festival, the Band Festival and the WA Primary Schools Massed Choir Festival. There is also a regular in-house event for Year 6 students which began in 2020 called Monday Maestro where individual students perform to an audience of their peers at lunchtime, rounding off an extensive and varied music program.
